Looking back on the year

Well, we are coming to the close of another year. It has been a very interesting one for me. So much has happened that should flow over into the new year. I am interested in seeing how it all plays out. I have a lot of work to do for the up coming year. Projects to finish, projects to get off the ground. But in all that, I am thankful for what I have been blessed with. A great talent, a gift of life, an amazing girlfriend and the passion and desire to chase my dream.

I spent this year working hard on getting into a studio and finding myself a job as a designer. It didn't happen, again, but I did get to do a couple freelance things that although did not pay too well, gave me the opportunity to try new styles and push myself a bit. I pray that for the new year, I will be able to begin to reach the place that I would like to be. I struggled many times with the though of leaving the art game as a career for good. I was really losing hope. There are many other talented people who sometimes never get in and thrive so maybe I am one of them. Who knows? All I do know is that I cant quite or give up. The passion for being an artist in the working world is too strong on my heart. I have been looking and chasing many other industries outside of animation though. I have taken an interest in illustration, graphic design and fashion design. They are fun and creative worlds that can allow for many new in interesting opportunities. I will just see how it all goes.

I guess, the biggest things that I took from this year was the ability to be patient and still pursue, the ability to keep myself motivated even when it seems that things may not work out and the drive to never give up. Well, it looks like I'm doin it again in 2010.

Hi,
I’m going to take this moment to thank some people who I don’t know but hope to meet and maybe even work with someday.

As you all know, I’m a character designer, I also write and am currently developing some series pitches. I love animation, I love film and I love story. I think that in many ways, animation is one of the greatest story telling formats because of how diverse and how expandable it is and can be. It’s a remarkable tool for telling a tale and in many ways does not get the respect that it deserves.

Its is now 4:21 in the morning and I have just finished watching the last episode of what I think is one of the best animated series in north American history (remember, this is my opinion and not necessarily yours). I just finished the Avatar: the last air bender. I feel it is highly necessary to say that in my time on this earth to this point, I have had the pleasure of watching many cartoons and have seen so many come and go. Rarely do I respond in the way I did to this show. I can say that my top 5 favorite cartoons in no order would have to be CLONE HIGH, BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES, BATMAN BEYOND, SAMURAI JACK, and to top it off, THE AVATAR. These shows have in many ways defined my style, story sense and understanding of design, animation and cinematography. I have grown up with these shows and have fallen in love with their story and life forces. The level of writing, care and attention that went into these productions is something I hold to high esteem as both an artist and a fan of film.

Because I began the topic with the intension of talking about THE AVATAR, I will do so by extending a congratulatory clap for each and every person who played a role in this shows creation, development, direction and production. Every last person who drew every last line deserves a standing ovation for bring this incredible show to life and following it through until its finale which as a fan since before day one, in fact, since the first time I saw the first trailer, means so much to me. After shows like SAMURAI JACK ended, I waited for a series to come along that did not at all follow the conventional mode of operation and along came this beautiful tale. If you are still reading this and you have not ever seen this show, I would highly recommend it. It is a captivation story with superb writing, humor, drama, suspense and an animation production quality that I have not seen since the shot lived CYBER SIX which was also an outstanding animated series.

THE AVATAR is a story that if you choose to follow it and allow yourself to become involved and invested in the characters and plot, you will understand what it is that I am feeling right now. I did not cry, but I was so emotionally torn, excited, sad and any other emotion that you can feel during the duration of the series. I won’t waste anymore time talking but I will end by once again saying thank you to all of the great staff over at NICK studios and any other involved studio who worked on it and the creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who I have never met but highly respect and hope to one day meet during my animation/film career. And lastly I want to thank the creators and teams responsible for the other shows that I mentioned in this little congratulatory article for all the ways they have influenced me as an artist and writer, and helped feed my passion for creativity and thinking outside of the box.

Im tired from this weekend but i figure i will put this one up before i tuck myself in.

and a reminder to any student artist who may want to get into animation or character design, nothing beats just being around people. go where people are and watch...do it for a few hours. take notes, study how they move, look, stand, sit, talk, the way they are. grab a pen and just start to fell over the poses you see. im no teacher but learning from my mentors and teachers, nothing beats real life especially when your job as an animator or character designer is to replicate it.

Well, the Fan Expo is over but what i wonderful time i had. it was so great to meet all of the cool people and see what everyone is up to. the best part was getting to meet and then eat with one of my idols and inspirations, Stephen Silver. Im still not over it yet, haha, but i think ill do fine. Thanks to Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera for all of the motivating and kind words and to all of the other artists who took interest in my work and encouraged me....thank you guys so much.

Its a scary thing sometimes when your breaking into an industry that can be unpredictable, but its nice to have even just verbal support from people you look up to.
